Q. Can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers? Who is Tryford Makumbe off the stage?
A:Tryford Makumbe, popularly known as Try Makumbe, is a contemporary musician, songwriter, and performer committed to preserving Zimbabwean musical heritage while introducing a modern sound. My music focuses on storytelling, inspiration, and addressing real-life experiences that many people face in their daily lives.
Off the stage, I am a humble, resilient, and determined individual. I grew up facing difficult circumstances after being orphaned at a tender age, and those early life struggles shaped my character and outlook on life. I believe in perseverance, faith, and hard work. My life journey has taught me to remain grounded and to use music as a tool to inspire hope and strength in others.
Q. Where did you grow up, and how did your background shape your love for music?
A:I grew up in Masvingo Province, in Nyajena rural area. Growing up in a rural environment exposed me to traditional gatherings, community celebrations, and cultural storytelling through music. Sungura music was a common sound in the community, and I developed a deep love for it from a young age.
Being orphaned at a young age made music even more meaningful to me. Music became my comfort, my voice, and my way of expressing emotions. These experiences shaped my passion and helped me develop a deep emotional connection with music.
Q. When did you first realize you wanted to become a musician?
A:I realized my passion for music during my school years when I started participating in performances and entertainment events. The encouragement I received from people motivated me to take music seriously. Over time, I realized music was more than just talent it was my purpose.
Q. Who inspired your sound in Sungura music? Any legends you looked up to?
A:My sound has been inspired by Lucky Chikuwa and ZCC musicians whose spiritual and emotional style influenced my musical direction. Their meaningful messages, unique rhythms, and connection with listeners played a major role in shaping my sound. I also draw inspiration from other Sungura pioneers who laid the foundation of the genre.
Q. What was your first breakthrough moment in your career?
A:My breakthrough came when my music started gaining recognition from listeners and fans across different communities and online platforms. The positive feedback and growing fan base gave me confidence to continue working harder and pushing my music to wider audiences.
Q. Your latest song is doing very well what inspired it?
A:My latest song was inspired by real-life experiences and challenges people face daily. I wanted to create a song that gives hope, encouragement, and speaks directly to people's lives.
Q. Did you expect the song to become this popular? Why do you think fans are connecting with it?
A:I believed in the message of the song, but I did not expect the overwhelming response. Fans are connecting with it because it is emotional, relatable, and speaks to everyday experiences.
Q. What message are you trying to send through your music?
A:My message is one of hope, perseverance, and faith. I want people to feel encouraged and inspired whenever they listen to my music.
Q. How do you usually create your songs—from idea to final recording?
A:I draw inspiration from life experiences, then develop lyrics and melodies. After rehearsals with my team, we refine the sound and proceed to studio recording.

A:Yes, I mainly write from personal experiences and everyday life situations to create authentic and relatable music.
Q. What challenges have you faced in the music industry so far?
A:Challenges include limited resources, promotion difficulties, and building recognition in a competitive industry.
Q. How have those challenges shaped you as an artist?
A:They have strengthened my determination, resilience, and discipline. I remain committed to producing quality music.
Q. How do you see Sungura music evolving today?
A:Sungura music continues to evolve as artists introduce new sounds while maintaining traditional roots. Social media has also helped expand the genre internationally.
Q. What do you think makes Sungura special compared to other genres?
A:Sungura is special because of its storytelling, cultural identity, and unique guitar rhythms that connect deeply with listeners.
Q. What do you enjoy doing when you’re not making music?
A:I enjoy spending time with family, listening to music, and interacting with fans.
Q. Who is the person behind the scenes that supports your career the most?
A:My manager, my family, and my team provide strong support and encouragement that keeps me focused and motivated.
Q. What can fans expect from you next—any new projects or collaborations?
A:Fans can expect new music, collaborations, and live performances. I have already worked on collaborations with different artists including Obert Chari, Agartha Marudzwa, Blessing Shumba, and many more. These collaborations have helped me grow musically and reach wider audiences. I am also working on more exciting projects and future collaborations.
Q. Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?
A:I see myself becoming one of the leading contemporary Sungura artists, releasing more albums, and expanding internationally while continuing to represent Zimbabwean music.
